You’ve got two main paths: Wi-Fi-based mesh (shorter range, higher bandwidth) or radio-based mesh (longer range, lower data).

For survival, I’d grab a mix: Wi-Fi for home base, LoRa or goTenna for distance.
Solar chargers (like the Anker 21W, $59) or battery packs keep them humming off-grid.
2. Software: Make It Work
Your devices need software to talk. Here’s what to use:
- For Wi-Fi Mesh: - OpenWRT (openwrt.org): Free, open-source firmware. Flash it onto compatible routers (like TP-Link or Ubiquiti) for mesh mode. Check the supported devices list to confirm yours works. Setup guide here. 
- TP-Link Deco App (iOS/Android): If you go Deco, this app handles setup out of the box. No firmware flashing needed—just plug and play. 
 
- For Radio Mesh: - Meshtastic app (meshtastic.org): Open-source software for LoRa devices like Heltec. Pair it with your phone via Bluetooth for encrypted texting over miles. Flash it using their web installer.  
- goTenna App (iOS/Android): Comes with goTenna Mesh. Simple, plug-and-play texting and mapping. No DIY required.  
 
- Phone-Based Option: - Briar app (briarproject.org): Peer-to-peer messaging app that works over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. No hardware needed beyond phones, but range is short unless you link it to other nodes. 
 
3. Connect and Test
- Wi-Fi Setup: For OpenWRT, flash your routers, set them to 802.11s mesh mode (same channel, SSID, and encryption), and place them within 100-300 ft of each other. Test with a laptop or phone—send a file or ping between nodes.
- Radio Setup: With Meshtastic or goTenna, pair the devices to your phone, set a channel, and send a test message. LoRa can reach miles if you’ve got line-of-sight; obstructions cut that down.
- Power Tip: Rig a small solar panel or car battery with an inverter to keep nodes alive in a blackout.
4. Expand the Network
